On September 29, 2007, Shawan Downs hosted the seventh annual Legacy Chase, an event that had become an anticipated social tradition for many Maryland families and businesses.
Racing with a Purpose
The Legacy Chase married the excitement of steeplechasing with the natural beauty of the Hunt Valley countryside. Spectators gathered for an afternoon of racing, hospitality, and community, while the event raised money for an important local health care mission.
Proceeds benefited GBMC HealthCare. The previous year's event generated $90,000 for GBMC's nursing department, demonstrating how a signature sporting event could make a meaningful contribution beyond the racecourse.
As Shawan Downs' signature event, the Legacy Chase featured multiple steeplechase races awarding close to $100,000 in purse money. The combination of athletic competition, tradition, and philanthropy gave the event a distinctive place on Maryland's annual social calendar.
